Girl's Best Friend: Border Collie

Posted at 9:00 - 4th September 2018 - Sarah Booth

When you see this dog in action, there is no question of them being the most intellectual breed on this planet. Border Collies are athletic, energetic and learn new skills exceptionally quickly, making them the top choice for famers and families alike.

Collie’s originate from the county of Northumberland close to the Scottish Borders and have been admired for their herding skills for hundreds of years. Woe betide the sheep that dares to ignore the Border Collie!

Lovers of outdoor adventures

With their high levels of intelligence, loyalty and eagerness to please Border Collies are great to train and can be successful in many disciplines. From therapy dogs to rescue dogs, sniffer dogs to dogs that take the lead in the show or agility ring, they are graceful, alert and always ready to obey commands.

Like any intelligent breed, Border Collies require high levels of exercise and social interaction. They are most suited to people who lead active, outdoor lives and aren’t always the best choice for first time dog owners due to the specificity of their needs. Indeed, if your Collie doesn’t receive the correct levels of exercise and training you will end up with an unhappy, unruly dog who can be hard to handle and potentially destructive.

Collies are huge fun to be around!

'If socialized at an early age, Collie’s can make great family dogs especially if your family loves to spend the majority of their time in the great outdoors.'

However, if socialized at an early age, Collie’s can make great family dogs especially if your family loves to spend the majority of their time in the great outdoors. Occasionally their herding tendencies may make them prone to rounding up your children, but this could perhaps come in handy when it reaches bedtime!

Collies are huge fun to be around and their playful nature means they are often very entertaining. In the hands of a loving, enthusiastic, outdoor embracing family this dog would make a fantastic companion in the same measure as it makes the perfect working dog.
